Debra Wilson-Saunders

Debra Wilson-Saunders is a doctoral student in the Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) program at the University of Delaware.  With more than 20 years of experience in human services, corrections, reentry programming, family support, and organizational leadership, she brings extensive practical expertise to her academic work.

Her research focuses on the mental health and behavioral development of Black and Latino boys, with particular attention to the underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis of mental conditions in public schools.  She is interested in understanding how family processes, school environments, and systemic factors contribute to behavioral outcomes, educational attainment, and involvement in the juvenile justice system.  Through her research, Debra seeks to identify family-centered and school-based strategies that promote positive youth development and reduce pathways to incarceration.
