In Fall 2018, the Department of Human Development & Family Sciences (HDFS) launched a Social Entrepreneur-in-Residence (SEIR) Program. Each academic year, the residency program welcomes prominent, local social entrepreneurs to serve as educators, mentors, and advocates for social innovation and entrepreneurship on UD’s campus. The SEIR Program is supported in partnership with UD’s Horn Entrepreneurship.
The Social Entrepreneur-in-Residence (SEIRs) serve in a month-long role to facilitate discussions and encourage further understanding and engagement in social entrepreneurship on campus. The SEIRs serve as area experts both inside and outside the classroom, with activities ranging from “brown bag” practitioner talks, classroom presentations, one-on-one student coaching, campus-based advocacy, event coordination, and research engagements. Throughout their stay, SEIRs share their expertise, experience, and networks with students, in order to help build strong campus-to-community opportunities and connections.
Throughout their one-month residence, Social Entrepreneurs in Residence (SEIRs) are expected to:
- Become a part of the University of Delaware through being present on the campus two to three days a week
- Participate in the standing social entrepreneurship events on campus, including the Social Entrepreneurship Speaker Series, academic classes, and extracurricular events
- Hold open office hours for advising and consulting for our undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, and faculty community
- Engage in a professional project or research in consultation with our faculty
SEIRs will be provided with the following through their affiliation with the University of Delaware:
- A letter of support from the University
- A stipend and parking passes for scheduled days on campus
- Physical space for office hours, meetings, and independent work
- Administrative support for coordinating meetings and events on campus
- Other resources in coordination with the Faculty Coordinator (e.g., research resources, materials)

Latiaynna Tabb is an MS graduate (2015) of the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and its first Social Entrepreneur in Residence during the fall semester. Tabb is the founder of Tabb Management – a Philadelphia-based community & creative project management firm that contracts and consults with mission-driven organizations to strengthen relationships with their target audiences. Applying her natural creativity and background in social sciences, which forms the core values and lens in which her business operates, she has worked with organizations like the United Way, Drexel University, People’s Emergency Center CDC and the Delaware River Waterfront Commission.
