Summer Professional Development Opportunities

The Institute for Excellence in Early Childhood, in collaboration with the Department of Human Development & Family Studies, is offering two new professional development opportunities for teachers, after school professionals, building administrators, program directors, and supervisors in programs serving young children and youth. Each professional development opportunity offers the option to take separate modules or a complete series of modules. Participants will receive documentation of Continuing Education Credits (CEUs); 1 CEU=1 hour of instruction upon completion of module(s). All professionals working in the fields of early childhood education and human services are eligible for registration.

Early Language & Literacy in Early Childhood Education

This training will provide participants with knowledge and skills to support young children’s (birth to 8 years) language and literacy development based on state standards and guidelines from NAEYC(National Association for the Education of Young Children) and IRA (International Reading Association). The participants will learn about the strategies to set up literacy rich environment, various story book reading techniques, teaching alphabets and phonological awareness, linking play and literacy, supporting English language learners, and strategies to monitor and assess literacy development. The training program consists of 8 modules with assigned readings, discussion, and projects.

In this series of five five-hour modules, participants will learn strategies for providing ongoing support and professional development for staff working in programs serving young children and youth, including teachers, after school professionals, building administrators, program directors, and supervisors. Participants may elect to take some or all of the workshops in this series. The first two modules, however, are required before taking any of the remaining modules.
