Awards and Honors

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies is now accepting student self-nominations for the following Awards and Scholarships. 

To  apply:  Students must complete the Student Self-Nomination Form and contact two faculty members who are willing to provide letters of recommendation.  Application must be submitted by January 15, 2010.

1.  Lila Murphy Community and Family Services Scholarship

A monetary award ($200) to a Human Services major who has demonstrated outstanding service to the local community through voluntary involvement in programs benefiting children, youth, elderly, and/or their families.

2.  Lila C. Murphy Award for Women's Equity and Leadership

A monetary ($200) award to a female student in Human Development and Family Studies acknowledging student leadership activities and/or contributions to women's equity issues.

3.  Jane I. Davidson Laboratory Preschool Award

A monetary award ($200) given to a junior, senior, or Master’s student in Early Childhood Education to honor the memory of Jane I. Davidson for her extraordinary ability to teach young children and families.  The student exemplifies the philosophy of the Laboratory Preschool and has demonstrated unusual desire and skill in teaching children with special needs and/or extraordinary ability to create and implement curriculum through play.

4.  Alice P. Eyman Professional Development Award

A monetary award ($200) presented to a junior, senior or graduate student in Early Childhood Education.  The award recipient demonstrates a strong commitment and passion for building effective partnerships with children and their families and exemplifies, through their work with children and families, the philosophy of the Laboratory Preschool.  Exceptional qualities of professionalism including advocating for the needs of children and families, participating in professional growth experiences and ability to use reflection as learning tool will be considered. Criteria:  Minimum index of 3.0.  Student must have participated in a placement at The Laboratory Preschool at some time in his/her college career.

5.  Strattner-Gregory Graduate Child Advocacy Award

A monetary award ($1,000) to a graduate student with advanced standing in Human Development and Family Studies who, by reason of scholarship ability, professional orientation, communication skills, and personal commitment shows promise of becoming a strong advocate for children.

6.  The Catherine Bieber Scholarship for Academic Achievement and Leadership in Human Development and Family Studies

A monetary award ($1,000) to a student who has demonstrated academic achievement and provided leadership in human development and family studies. The award is made possible by Catherine Bieber, M.S., a former University of Delaware faculty member, Associate Dean and Acting Dean of the College of Human Services.

7.  Julie Mapes Wilgen Award in Human Sexuality & Gender Studies

A monetary award ($1,000) that recognizes outstanding achievement by an undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated a commitment to the field of human sexuality and gender studies and who has shown an appreciation for diversity and for the betterment of society.  This award honors Dr. Wilgen’s lifelong work and dedication to the field of sexuality education and family studies.  The applicant must meet the following criteria:
     * Undergraduate or graduate student of any major at U.D.
     * Has attended U.D. for at least 1 year
     * Minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 as evidenced by transcript
     * Demonstrated commitment to study or engage in field of human sexuality & gender studies
     * Demonstrated appreciation for diversity and the betterment of society
     * 2-page essay by student addressing this demonstration of commitment and appreciation
       described above
     * 2 letters of recommendation

The application procedure for this award differs from the other HDFS awards. The student is responsible for submitting an application packet to the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, consisting of:  transcript, essay, 2 letters of recommendation and resume with student contact information by January 25th .

8.  Van Camp/Remage Teacher Education Merit Award

An award ($450) to an ECE major (in 2009) who demonstrates academic ability, exhibits an ability to overcome special problems and demonstrates potential for future contributions to the field of education and the community. Other criteria:  minimum index of 3.0, priority to returning female over 25 years old who meets other criteria

9.  Swank Human Services Disabilities Scholarships

The Howard W. Swank, Alma K. Swank, and Richard Kemper Swank Foundation awards the Swank Human Services Disabilities Scholarships to two (2) Human Services majors in their Sophomore years who are concentrating their studies in disabilities services. The Scholarship will cover tuition, books, fees, and related expenses for their Junior and Senior years, up to $18,000 per student.   The Howard W. Swank, Alma K. Swank, and Richard Kemper Swank Foundation is making this significant commitment in order to address the need to develop human service professionals to support youth and adults with neuro-developmental disabilities and their families.   Eligibility: All student recipients must be Delaware residents.   Students accepting the scholarship will sign an agreement to work in the state of Delaware for a two year period of time or repay the scholarship funds. Such employment shall commence within six (6) months from graduation at the University of Delaware. Employment must be as a human service professional whose job is to support persons with neuro-developmental disabilities and their families.   The application procedure for this award differs from the other HDFS awards & scholarships. 10.  Marion H. Steele Symposium

The annual interdisciplinary, scholarly conference named after Marion H. Steele (’28), a UD distinguished alumna and longtime editor of the Journal of Home Economics. The symposium focuses on families, consumer sciences, human development and communities. Students receive monetary awards and scholarly recognition for the best research papers and posters.  Awards are presented for:
     1st ($575) and 2nd ($300) place undergraduate papers
     1st ($575) and 2nd ($300) place graduate papers
     1st ($350) and 2nd ($200) place undergraduate posters
     1st ($350) and 2nd ($200) place graduate posters. 
In addition, the Chair’s Theme of the Year award of $575 will be awarded to the most outstanding paper (undergraduate or graduate) that contributes to the “theme of the year” as determined by the department chair.   Information about submitting papers for the Marion H. Julie Mapes Wilgen, Ph.D.

Julie Mapes Wilgen Award in Human Sexuality & Gender Studies

The $1,000 award honors Dr. Wilgen’s lifelong work and dedication to the field of sexuality education and family studies. It recognizes outstanding achievement by an undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated a commitment to the field of human sexuality and gender studies and who has shown an appreciation for diversity and for the betterment of society. Swank Human Services Disabilities Scholarships

The Howard W. Swank, Alma K. Swank, and Richard Kemper Swank Foundation will be awarding Swank Human Services Disabilities Scholarships in 2009 to 2 Human Services majors with Disabilities Studies minors in their Sophomore years who are concentrating their studies in disabilities services. Graduate Student Travel Fund Award

The Graduate Student Travel Fund is established by the Office of the Provost to help University of Delaware graduate students attend and participate in professional conferences pertaining to their field of study. Conference travel plays an essential role in the academic growth and development of graduate students by providing opportunities for presentation of student work in a professional setting, as well as opportunities for networking and exposure to the latest academic research.

The Office of Graduate Studies is charged with the responsibility of administering funds for this purpose. The deadline for application for a travel award is one month prior to the time of travel. The student will be reimbursed upon the submission of appropriate receipts and must conform with University policy on allowable travel reimbursements.

The policies and procedures for these funds are as follows:

  1. A student must have a paper accepted for presentation (a copy of the acceptance letter should be provided) along with a tentative title and authors of the presentation (the student listed as first author takes precedence over others).
  2. The student should provide a written statement as to the value of the conference and presentation for his/her training and career.
  3. The student's dissertation or thesis advisor must submit a letter of nomination and explanation of the significance of the student's participation.
  4. The amount of support will be based on the type of participation in the conference up to a maximum of $500 and the department or college must match the amount of the award offered by the Office of Graduate and Professional Education, up to $300. The departmental match must not be from research grant travel monies but must be from other departmental resources.
  5. A student may apply for funding only once each fiscal year according to the announced schedule of deadlines for applying.
  6. The student must submit a budget for the proposed travel and include information about all sources of funding being provided for the travel.
  7. The student is required to fill out a “Graduate Travel Fund Award” application form and submit it and the required enclosures to the Office of Graduate and Professional Education.

CHEP Summer Scholars

Pat Nelson Mid Atlantic CFR AwardThe College of Education and Public Policy will offers up to ten $3,000 awards to sophomore and junior majors in the College, enabling them to do in-depth research with faculty in the College. Each Scholar will receive a stipend of $3,000 and a summer housing allowance of $500. Students will work on their projects full time for ten weeks in the summer and will continue to do three credits’ worth of research in the following academic year. The research done during the academic year may be part of the senior thesis for the Degree With Distinction or Honors Degree with Distinction. (http://www.urp.udel.edu/scholars/Default.aspx)

Service-Learning Scholars

Service-Learning Scholarships provide highly motivated students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a service-learning project for ten weeks in the summer in a setting outside of the classroom. Scholars work in a Delaware community agency (non-profit, governmental, community-based action research, or service-based corporate activity) and simultaneously pursue academic reflection under the guidance of a UD faculty mentor. In this immersion-learning experience, students spend the bulk of their week working in the community and one-quarter of their time in academic reading, discussion, and reflection. Service-Learning Scholars receive a $3,000 stipend and an additional $500 housing allowance to enable students to participate in individual faculty-guided service-learning projects during 10 weeks in the summer. The Marion H. Steele Symposium

Ratledge Family Award for Delaware Public Service

Recipients of the Ratledge Family Award for Delaware Public Service must be members of the UD community. Professional staff, faculty, and students are eligible. Preference will be given to member of the College of Human Services, Education & Public Policy and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The award will be given to the person(s) who exemplifies excellence in public service to citizens in the State of Delaware. Public service contribution shall be defined to include both paid and volunteer work.

The Office of Women's Affairs Scholarships and Awards

Outstanding Alumni Award

This award annually honors a select few among the 19,000 living CHEP alumni who through their achievements and commitment – have made extraordinary contributions to the fields of human services, education and public policy. Nominations are welcome at any time. In evaluating nominees, the award selection committee will consider the nominee’s career achievements and accomplishments as well as his/her commitment and service to profession, community, and the University of Delaware.

Please include the nominee’s resume; newspaper or magazine clippings about the nominee are also helpful to the selection committee. The committee may contact you later for further information. Current members of the CHEP Alumni Association board of directors are not eligible for the award.
