Academic Honesty
As a University student, you are expected to exercise integrity when completing quizzes, examinations, class assignments, research, papers, and projects. The College of Education and Public Policy and the University consider academic honesty an integral component of the educational process. Additional information is available in the Student Guide to University Policies. The Academic Honesty information was retrieved from:
http://www.udel.edu/chep/osss/undergraduate/faq.html#academicpolicies
Course/Credit Overloads
You must obtain permission from your advisor and the and the Office of Student Support Services (105 PRS) to register for an increased credit load (18 or more credits) provided you have a cumulative index of 2.5 and an index of 3.0 for the preceding semester. In no instance will you be permitted to register for more than 22 credits including registration as pass/fail or listener. Additional fees must be paid when registering for more than 17 credits.
Course Substitutions
If you feel it is appropriate to substitute a different course for a required course in your academic program, you should consult your academic advisor. Your advisor may initiate the course substitution process if it is warranted and does not jeopardize the integrity of your program.
Declaring Majors and Minors
In order to declare a new major/minor, contact the academic department that houses the major/minor you are interested in to discuss any requirements, applications and/or deadline dates.
FERPA
FERPA stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and "grants certain rights, privileges and protections to students concerning educational records maintained by the University". Please see the UD Policy and Procedures Manual to see how this law affects you.
Incomplete Grades
An Incomplete (I) grade must be removed no later than the end of the first 2 weeks of the semester immediately following the course in question.
Pass/Fail Option
You may choose to take one elective course on a pass/fail basis each term. A letter grade is not given; the student either passes or fails. Credits earned in this way count only as electives, not as fulfilling specific requirements. The total number of credits taken on a pass/fail basis may not exceed 24 in the baccalaureate degree program excluding courses that are graded pass/fail only. A failing grade under the pass/fail option will be counted in the cumulative index.
Repeating a Course
Credits may be counted only once toward a degree. In other words, if you repeat a course to improve a passing grade, credits may not be counted a second time towards the minimum total credit hours required.
Transfer Credit Evaluation
You may choose to take courses at other institutions while you are enrolled at UD. Before doing so, you must visit the UD Transfer Center in the Student Services Building and complete a Transfer Credit Evaluation form, which requires signatures from the department offering the University's equivalent course and from your college's assistant dean. If you do not complete this form prior to enrolling in the course, we are not obligated to accept your transfer course(s) and credits. Note: Only credits, not grades, are transferable, and you must earn at least a “C” grade in a course for it to be transferable.
Internal Transfer
We welcome transfer students. We require that you first contact the HDFS Department to meet with an Advisor to discuss your interests, career plans, and any special needs. We want to ensure that our majors are a good fit with your academic goals.
Applying for Internal Transfer for Early Childhood Education (ECE) major:
- Current University of Delaware students must contact the HDFS Department to request an appointment to discuss departmental transfer policies with the appropriate person.
- Applications may be obtained on-line or in person and returned to the department office at any time.
- All supporting materials must be submitted with the application (including documentation of passing Praxis scores for ECE applicants with 32 or more credit hours).
- Students are notified of review committee’s decision within one week of receipt of the completed application.
Minimum requirements for submitting an application for internal transfer into ECE major:
Applying for Internal Transfer for Human Services (HMSV), Clinical Services (CLSV) or Administration and Family Policy (AFP) concentrations:
- Current University of Delaware students must contact the HDFS Department to request an appointment to discuss departmental transfer policies with the appropriate person.
- Applications can be submitted any time.
- All supporting materials must be submitted with the application.
- Students are notified of review committee’s decision usually within one week of receiving an application.
Minimum requirements for submitting an application for internal transfer into all Human Services majors
General information
- The number of students who can be accepted into the Department of Human Development and Family Studies is limited by the current number of students in a particular major, course demands, availability of advisors/supervisors, and clinical placements.
- Not all students meeting the minimum requirements are guaranteed admission.
- The HDFS Undergraduate Program Committee reviews applications and, based on availability of space, admits students who show the most promise of successfully completing the degree. The principle criterion for selection is academic performance. If accepted, students must process the electronic change of major forms and once completed, are assigned to an academic advisor.
- Given the recent demand for the department’s courses, non-majors may have difficulty accessing HDFS courses. Under no circumstances will a non-major be admitted to a “majors only” course. Students are encouraged to explore alternative majors since enrollment in HDFS courses in the hope of gaining admission may not lead to admission into an HDFS major.
NOTE: No credit by examination is available for HDFS courses. Transfer credits for HDFS 412, 413, 435, 449, and EDUC 400 are not accepted.
IT IS THE POLICY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE THAT NO PERSON SHALL BE SUBJECTED TO DISCRIMINATION ON THE GROUNDS OF RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, SEX, NATIONAL OR ETHNIC ORIGIN, AGE, HANDICAPPED OR VETERAN STATUS.
